California and Australia may have the advantage of a hot climate but Europe and France in particular boasts a wealth of ‘terroirs’, a stunning variety of soil types, geological lies and microclimates which have been dedicated to growing vines for over 20 centuries. The Romans were the first to plant vines in France in the second half of the 1st Century A.D. on the slopes of the right bank of the river Garonne.
